I don't have Direct TV but I was in Vegas this weekend & the hotel I was at had DTV & I missed a couple of games "due to weather" WTF! I have cable at home & I have not missed a game in years! I have Red Zone & NFL Network at home with Time Warner. Works for me...

Do we have the specific # to call for this or do we just call the typical number and ask to cancel service?
I called 1-800-531-5000. I have had the best luck by being very nice and pleasant (almost obsequious) I don't threaten to leave and go to the Dish or cable. Ask to talk to a customer retention specialist

Coops, I believe some of the best deals that they offer are for new customers. As a matter of fact, when I call, I nicely mention that I see some great deals for new customers and ask what they can do for a loyal, long-term customer like my self. Currently they are offering the "Genie" free to new customers. Also, if you have a friend who has Direct TV, you can get them a $100 off their bill. Or if you like, I can send you a Direct TV, new customer, "Gift Card" that would get both you and I $100 off our bills ($10 off per month for 10 months)

I called and said I wanted to cancel my service. When the operator answered I explained that my bill is just too high and I can go to netflix/hulu for $15/month. Before I could cancel my service she offered me all the financial discounts and then I inquired about Sunday ticket. I basically kept pushing until I found out what they wouldn't give me for free(which was genie).

No contract extension, my contract runs out next August still.

ETA: I called the same number as Bucky

How do you find out if you are under contract or not?

Call the same number they say ask to cancel, and then ask when your contract ends. That is an easy way to slip into the credit land too when they ask why you want to know this date. You say you are exploring your options.

Been with Direct Tv for 17 years and have had the football package since it started, called a few weeks ago to add Starz on because I like the series Magic City (Ben the Butcher my idol) and asked about the price for the upcoming football would be, after talking with the young fellow I got the whole Sunday ticket, redzone, computer use or smart phone all for free a $275 package because of being a customer for 17 years, last year got a $200 Visa gift card, No complaints other than during heavy rain lose the feed searching for satellite. Good Luck to everyone with the deal they get.

Not as much luck this eveing as I have a contract that expires 9/1/13. Was originally told I could get the ticket for free and then she put me on hold and came back and said they were only offering the ticket at 50% off at this time. Also was told to continue my discounts they could not do anything unil 9/1/13 when my contract expires. I am a 10 year customer and I was basically told to call back on 9/1/13 and they would extend my - $30/month discounts as well as very likely get the NFL ticket for free. Disappointing I could not get it done this evening but am confident it will all happen when I re-call on September 1st.

I just realized that there are 2 options this year, nfl ticket and nfl ticket max. Main difference is you don't get the red zone channel without the max. The guys that have called and are getting this for free, which are one are you getting for free?

I finally made the yearly call today. I was given Sunday Ticket max for the season at no charge, 40/month off my bill for the next 6 months, 30/month off for the 6 months after that, an upgrade to the whole home genie (there is an additional $3/month charge for it and I locked into a 24/month lease in taking it), 6 free months of Starz, and 4 free months of Showtime. Not bad for a 20 minute phone call.

My list of credits is longer then my list of charges and I have credits anywhere from 6 Months to 15 Months. I have everything and it's not cheap but they give back and are the best by far. I've gotten the NFL package for free the last 3 years only this year I'm taking a credit over 15 months that equals the price of the package. Really don't want to get greedy because I get so much and I haven't paid for the NBA in 2 years and I'm going to call them soon and see if I can get another freebie. But they make plenty of money off me but I have to say again they give me back in a big way.

I love if I need a tech they usually send him down free a time or two but if you don't have the coverage they want to charge you 49.95 so if I ever need a tech to come down I buy the coverage I think it's 7.99 now and on the same call them them the problem and get charged 7.99 even thought I just sign up I keep it one month and then cancel it. I love that place. Just ask for the retention Dept be nice and negotiate calmly been with them since 98

Once you have it it's done I would still call and ask them what kind of promotions you have for the long time customer and then negotiate from there but go easy don't threaten then after they tell you what they have ask about the NBA package and if any specials are going on (That's if you want it) they always have something. When talking JMO but don't argue or threaten make conversation. Where are you, How's the weather out there. If you get a hard ass which I never have just thank you hang up and call tomorrow. I got guy one time who loved sports and we talked for about 20 minutes nice guy and kept on offering stuff. When I call from Vegas I usually get them from Colorado or Mississippi. I was in Mississippi for St Paddies day this year for there big parade and a wedding and we talked about that she was nice. Your from NY give them that NY Charm.

Here is what I do...Call up the main directv number and say that you're thinking about canceling service and want to know if you have any fees to get out of your contract. They'll send you to the Retention Dept. If they don't, keep fighting them until you are with the Retention Dept as they are the ones that can help you. Once you get them, make up a story about why you want to cancel. I told them yesterday that I already have my internet with Comcast, and they are now offering me the Triple Play with internet, phone, and cable for $99 a month, and that today I'm paying $60 to Comcast for internet and another $130 to DTV. My wife really wants me to switch, since it will save us almost 100 bucks a month, and we're looking for ways to save money right now as the cost of her health benefits skyrocketed this school year. I said that I really didn't want to switch since I love the Sunday Ticket, but we just can't justify paying that much $ just for the ticket. At this point, they start offering you stuff to stay. Some don't get too much, others get a ton of good stuff. Probably comes down to how convincing you are about leaving, how long you've been with them, etc. The lady started offering me stuff yesterday, I said I still probably needed to cancel, then kept going until I said that I'd stay.

How can you not have showtime, Check out Ray Donavan but go to on demand and catch up and you don't watch Dexter. Showtime is catching up with HBO as far a series go. they get better and better. Forget the movies it's the series that HBO and Showtime show that's worth the money.

Like OT--I just try to be nice when I talk to them. This year the CSR I was talking to couldn't/wouldn't do much for me so I asked for the "Customer Retention Dept". I never threaten to leave, but pleasantly ask what discounts/promotions they have for "long-term" customers. I've been with them since 1995. Earlier in the year, (Jan) I got the "Genie" system for free and my annual call in Aug resulted in a total of $894 in discounts over the next 18 months, with most of the discounts coming over the next 12 months. This year they didn't even ask me to extend my contract with them for another year. She said I'd been with them so long, she didn't feel it was necessary. Then after all that was done, I called again in mid-August and said that I didn't need the ability to access my NFL package from my phone because I would never use that feature, so I was wondering if I could get a discount because I didn't use that part of the package. She said that, no she couldn't give me anything off because that's just a part of the NFL MAX package, but that she could give me an additional $10 off per month for the next year on my monthly bill. It amazes me how much latitude some of the DTV employees seem to have in doling out promotions/discounts. And as OT said, if you don't get what you're looking for, just call back another day

As an aside-- I had a problem about a year ago with my receiver box-- called and got a guy in Boise-- ended up talking Boise football for 20 minutes-- and he sent me a new box Fed Ex Next Day Delivery-- no charge--- just glad he wasn't in Lake Charles, La-- cause I know nothing about McNeese St football.

Did anyone else have a problem/delay changing channels on Sunday? I was trying to watch a couple of games at once & It would take forever for the channel to change to another game. It only seems to happen while watching the NFL package... ? Very frustrating, it was not a second or two it was a minute or more. It got to the point where I just stopped switching channels & went to red zone.
I wish this was my biggest problem but I was just wondering if it was only me or if others had the same issue?
