so basically what i am getting out of this conversation is that you can get NFL Ticket for free if you simply call and tell them that you don't want to pay for it? Thats awful biz on their part but what do i know? just seems foolish but love the fact you can get away with it...

No that was last year when they were giving it to new subscribers. My opening line was I was tired of seeing Deion Sanders flying around the TV giving away free NFL to new subribers and then after about 10 minutes of negotiations I got it for free. They add everything in the comment section of there computer so I always open up with you can see I called before but you guys are always giving specials to new subscribers what can you do for loyal customers.

They see I have everything so they can't offer me 3 months free HBO or show-Time so they always give me a little taste like free DVR charge for 6 months which amounts to $10 a month or $5 off my bill for 6 months. Hey listen the greatest scam of all is you have to buy the DVR and then they charge you to use it every month. I tell I paid $200 for a DVR and now I have to paid $10 a month to use it. Lets face it they gauge you pretty good so getting a little something back isn't bad business it's good business. It's good customer service and they get it back 10 fold.

With the free NFL I also told the guy during negotiations that all I have to do is cancel and then tomorrow have my wife subscribe and get the free NFL. His answer was you would then lose your VIP status I told I really didn't care I wanted what you were giving to new customers and they did.
It just business you swing 100x's if you hit one you did better then not swinging at all. Business is Business.

Forgot one thing Mike is right about how many times you can do. I call them maybe once every 8/9 months just like the casino Free is good everybody is happy with Free as long as they're making money from you they don't mind throwing you a bone or two. Think about it I pay somewhere around $2200 - $2500 a year to watch TV how sick is that.

Pretty much but they have around 20 million US customers so the 500 or so that read online message boards and actually call in to request free Sunday Ticket isn't going to be noticed on their bottom line.

IMO they reduced the price to $199 this year the same price as 2002. I think they realized that there price was so out line and then started to give it away to new customers to build there customer base and opened up one big can of worms. Charging $199 this year is acceptable in today's market of course. I thing I read somewhere in this tread you may be able to get $20 chopped off. I'm not even going ask I'm saving my fights because I don't mind the $199. But I'm going to order it late because sometimes things have a way of changing. If they're not getting the sales that they project they may add something to the package. It's a game and it's great.
be respect and fair but be firm. Don't ask for something that's not reasonable. I would be totally shock if anyone gets the NFL for free this year.

Check out DBSTalk.com.....there is a thread there where people are saying they are getting it for free if they agree to a one year contract extension. I know most people don't like contracts but if you aren't planning to leave Directv what's the big deal with a one year contract for free Sunday Ticket?

If the CSR can't help you ask politely for the Retention dept and talk to them I just got the NFL Package for free with a one year contact extension
I'm not going anywhere anyway. The only thing I couldn't get is the Red Zone I'll call in a few weeks and see what happens with that.

Just got off the phone with Direct TV and this took place.

Called to cancel Sunday Ticket...they then offered to give it to me for 50 bucks, and i said ok.
Then I said with the whole viacom situation can you do anything else for me?
He then said that he would just give me sunday ticket for free, gave me movie channels free for 6 months, took 10 bucks off my bill each month for a year, and then also upgraded the rest of the tv's in my entire house with dvr receivers.

Ill say, that was a good 5 minute phone call and well worth it!!

Just wanted to pass the news on

Got free sunday ticket with redzone, 1/2 off starz, $5 off showtime and $5 off hbo and $5 off cinemax for 6 months. $10 off sports pack for 6 months. 3 months of whole home free ($3 a month).

They were a little limited with me because I just got free whole home DVR in March so my contract actually runs through 2014. Doesn't matter, still throwing lots of freebies out. It like the perfect storm where these people probably get rewarded by "keeping" you.

Well worth the 15 minute call.

I called in July when they had lost the viacom channels and complained, got over $700 in savings(free ticket, redzone, $$ discounts)

Called last week to add an HD receiver, got them to cover the $99 fee on that, installer showed up yesterday. I was as nice as possible to him and he hooked me up with some on demand movie credits and the directv cinema connection kit($40)

I think you're crazy if you ever pay full price for anything from directv. I love my directv.

What's the best way to approach this again? Last year I remember that I threatened to cancel my service. Is it better to just call and ask what they could do for a loyal customer?
  • MikeRASMikeRAS Senior Handicapper
    edited August 2012
You dont need to truly "threaten". But at the automated operator you say cancel service. This gets you a retention specialist whose job is to keep you. You then ask the person how long your contract runs with directv and if there would be cost to cancel service. At that point they will throw the house at you.

    Rinse, repeat.

I don't care anything about the NFL. I told them to cancel ESPN Gameplan-- ended up with free Gameplan, $20/month off for 12 months, and free DVR ($8/month) for 12 months. Just like last year, they tried to give me free NFL-- but, I turned them down-- don't want the whole town trying to come over to watch NFL on Sundays. Sunday is my day to relax, and read 362 newspaper articles about the college games.

The thread that will not die! LOL Started raining here in Indianapolis mid afternoon as Issac is finally bringing us a much needed 2"-4" inches of rain. Lost my signal on Direct TV so called and told them I was tired of their disrupted service while my signal was lost. Simply told them I was dropping my service and it took basically to agree to a 1 year agreement ( I have been a customer for 9 years) and received the $20 + $10 per month off for the next 12 months (a $360 savings.) Also got the NFL Ticket free for the 2012 season. About a 10 minute call to save $559 for the next 12 months. Guess it tells us all how much they overcharge us each month to watch TV! :-)

Free preview of Sunday Ticket tomorrow....don't forget to get your deals in if you are signing up for the season. New customers get the season for free! Lots of great signup deals out there as well, Costco cash card, AAA discount, Refer a Friend discount, Best Buy gift card, etc.

made my semi annual call(I always call after football season too)

$50 credit for this months bill
    $20 x 12 months
    $15 x 15 months
    $3 x 12 months
    $10 x 12 months

    Free sunday ticket
    Free Redzone
    Free mini genie

For some reason I can get free sunday ticket AND free redzone separate but the Sunday ticket max option is $147...so really all I'm missing is the ability to watch on my mobile device, that's not worth $147 to me so no problem.

I pushed for a free Genie($299) but they wouldn't budge...said next August I'll be eligible for a full genie and 4 mini genies...guess I'll try for those in my after football season call.

I got a similar deal when I called last week. I didn't get free Sunday Ticket including "The Red Zone" (which was what I called for) but got a total of $994 reduction spaced over the next 15 months. No re-up commitment (she said I'd been a customer for 19 years so no need). In Feb, they called me (first time I didn't have to call them to get something) and I received the Genie package with 3 "clients" , which are, what I believe you refer to as "mini genies, at no cost, including free installation. When I made the call, I did have to request to speak to a "customer retention specialist" as the original customer service person I spoke with basically couldn't give me anything

    * Additional info. I had originally called them about the "Genie" back in Nov of 2012, when I first heard about it and was told there was no promotional offers available for the Genie at that time because it was new. They told me when a promotion on the Genie was available, they would call me. And they did.

Yeah I would like to know how you question as well, I use threatening to leave them and get very little, or lots of hassle. Been a customer for 5+ yrs and buy some fights, mlb, nba and nfl and struggle getting anything every time. Please help, pm me if available. Thanks

Do we have the specific # to call for this or do we just call the typical number and ask to cancel service?
