Christopher Ado?s Hollywood Park Handicap Best Play Selections, Analysis,
and Wagering Strategies from Hollywood Park Sunday June 19, 2005 By
Christopher Ado

SATURDAY?S RECAP:

R5: LAVA MAN to WIN at $19.40
R7: ME MY MINE to WIN at $7.40
R8: NAVAJA to WIN at $11.00
Suggested $3 Pick 3 returned $403.50 for $15 investment

Today?s Action from Hollywood Park: I will look into and highlight races
4, 5, 6, and 7. In addition, I will put together $18 into a Pick 3 (Races
5-7)

Race 4: Claiming $62,500 to $55,000, 1-Mile Turf, Three-year olds
EMPEROROFTHERACES (#1, 15-1) is trained by Juan Garcia who has had a
terrific month of June having won four of his six wins at this meet and
majority of them were prices. Pirate?s Memoir (June 2, 3-1), Trendy (June
4, 9-1), and Dixie Law (June 8 and June 17 at $1.70 and $8.50
respectively) and all this makes his gray three-year old gelding by Raji
dangerous shipping back to Southern California after a promising first try
on the turf on May
27 at Golden Gate. His dam, Hopeful Amber, was a stakes winner and
produced six winners from as many starters including a turf winner and
this type of pedigree lead his connections to test him on the turf in
their first start off the claim for owner Marty Daniels and he produced a
terrific effort to finish a clear second behind the 6-5 favorite and gate
to wire winner J.J Maroun. With the blinkers off, he showed a brand new
dimension sitting off back behind loose on the lead pacesetter who was
able to dictate his own pace through leisurely fractions of 48.81 and
1:13.59-seconds. He rallied along the rail on the turn and put forth a
strong rally to finish five-lengths clear of the rest of the field earning
an above par BRIS late pace rating. The snail-like pace he encountered
last time out should not present as Beau will be sent forth to vie for the
early lead with Claymont in close pursuit ensuring a honest pace to set up
for our spot play?s late kick. Moreover, I find it interesting that
instead of running him for a lower claiming price, he runs for a higher
price than he was claimed a sign of confidence. Lands David Flores who was
aboard for Trendy?s 9-1 win earlier this meet and with the beneficial rail
draw and projected improvement second time on the surface look for a
square price with this late running Raji gelding.
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (1) EMPEROROFTHERACES to WIN
Main Exactas: 1-4, 1-5, and 1-7. Small reverse for each

Race 5: Maiden Claiming $40,000 to $35,000, 6-½ Furlongs, Three-and-up
HIGH Z (#7, 5-1) makes his second career start for trainer John Sadler who
towards the beginning of the Friday night program had only two wins this
meet, but he registered two wins in the last two days with Forty Suertudo
(June 17, $7.60) and Swing of the Cat (June 18, $6.20) indicating that his
barn is coming around and this home-bred gelding by High Brite has a
chance to steal this race on the front end as he drops from state bred
maiden special weights to state bred $40,000 maiden claimer in his second
try.
Trainer John Sadler tends to give his first time starters a race having
won only 13 of his last 205 (6%) in the past five years with his debuting
maidens and the fact that this gray went off at 11-1 is reflective of his
trainer?s lack of success with first time starters as he finished ahead of
only two rivals beaten 13-¾-lengths behind first time starter Modern
Viewpoint. Often debuting maidens run to the point of exhaustion and tire
and this gelding did exactly that in a better than looked try. He showed
fine early speed to chase an uncontested leader through the fastest and
second fastest opening quarter and half-mile fractions, respectively, on
the program (21.62 and 44.51). He was ahead half the field approaching the
quarter pole before tiring without being abused through the lane
indicating his margin of defeat is insignificant. He has bounced back with
three crisp works in the interim for a barn that has won 3 of his last 13
starters (23%) dropping from maiden to maiden claiming and after showing
speed versus better I look for this gelding to be sent to the front under
Jose Valdivia Jr. and not look back at a hint of a price.
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (7) HIGH Z to WIN
Main Exacta Box: 6-7
Smaller Exactas: 7-8 and 7-9. No reverse

Race 6: Claiming $40,000 to $35,000, 1-1/16 Miles Turf, Four-year olds and
up MILITARY ACADEMY (#2, 12-1) is trained by the ever dangerous and clever
John Martin barn who has won 27% of his starters this year but is
particularly adept in his turf horses shipping. In the past five years, he
has won 17 of his last 54 starters (31%) with his turf horses shipping and
he brings this razor sharp Royal Academy gelding to Hollywood Park in good
form and draws leading rider Rene Douglas in the irons. He broke through
with a strong pace pressing score on April 16 earning a Beyer Speed Figure
that is close to par for this level and moved up the class ladder on May 4
where he ran a tough luck third in a race where the first and second place
finishers rallied from fifth and fourth after the first half-mile. He
pressed favored El Prado?s Boy early through crisp early fractions for the
first half-mile and six furlongs, took over the lead at mid-stretch, only
to be collared by the opportunistic one-two finishers in a fine effort
that was validated when the favorite returned to win at the same class
level on June 3. He returned next in a Starter Allowance race on June 1
where he fit because he ran run for $6,250 or less last year and race was
open to horses that race for that price or less in 2004-2005 and he
rallied strongly to finish a fine second.
He was forced to race very wide through the first turn and into the
backstretch, split rivals on the turn, and closing strongly with the
winner in a race flattered when the fifth-place finisher returned to win.
He has the drawn the beneficial inside post and has necessary tactical
speed and strong closing kick to adjust to the pace of the race. Adept on
turf or dirt and from my three top choices, this dark bay is the highest
price and should not be ignored considering his current form cycle
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (2) MILITARY ACADEMY to WIN
Main Exacta Box: 2-6-9
Race 7: Starter Allowance, 6 Furlongs, Three-year olds and up QUALITY
ARMOR (#3, 4-1) required nine starts to break his maiden and last time
split the field after showing no early speed, but he is reunited with Pat
Valenzuela who was aboard for his maiden win back in February and was
aboard this colt?s runner-up effort on April 30 that was an excellent
effort at 11-1 behind the 7-5 favorite Bordonaro in a highly rated affair
and a similar effort makes this colt not only a perfect fit at this level
but one that can score the minor upset. In that race, he was forwardly
placed right behind the battling leaders of the favored winner and Tough
Negioator through fractions that were the second fastest opening quarter
and half-mile fractions from the five sprints on the program (21.70 and
44.38). He altered course towards the outside and finished strongly while
two-lengths clear of the rest of the field earning a Beyer Speed Figure
that is above par for this class level. He was bet down to the second
choice in his last start but failed to produce his customary positional
early speed and picked up the pieces to get up for fourth in a another
highly rated affair. The strength of that figure was verified when the
third-place finisher, Cheroot, returned to win last Friday at the same
class level. He should be forwardly placed right up with Shift Gears right
from the moments the gates open and when that rival begins to tire midway
on the far turn, he should get first run on the pace setters and prove to
tough to reel in as our most probable winner on the card for trainer
Rafael DeLeon.
Wagering Strategies:
Play the (3) QUALITY ARMOR to WIN
Main Exacta: 3-4. Small reverse

Hollywood Park Race 5 Pick 3

Race 5: (6) Majestic Avenue and (7) HIGH Z Race 6: (2) Military Academy,
(6) Tradition Rocks, and (9) Commanding Creek Race 7: (3) QUALITY ARMOR
and (4) Snapped Up

Ticket A: 7 / 2-3-9 / 3-4 = 1 x 3 x 2 x $1 = $6 Ticket B: 6-7 / 2-3-9 / 3
= 2 x 3 x 1 x $1 = $6
Ticket C: 7 / 2-3-9 / 3 = 1 x 3 x 1 x $2 = $6
Total Wager: $18

MOST PROBABLE WINNER: QUALITY ARMOR (Race 7, 4-1) BEST LONGSHOT BET:
EMPEROROFTHERACES (Race 4, 15-1) WORSE MORNING LINE FAVORITE: FABULOUS
GROOM (Race 6, 3-1)

It was a great day at Hollywood Park, nice to put a face to the names you
see on here every day. My wife kicked ass as usual when we go to an on
track location. We left HP and capped the night with a huge dinner at
    Claim Jumper.

I'll be back into the swing of things once I get back home and will post
some more winners. I will be doing the Hollywood Park Friday night card
    this next week.

    Take care,
