I apologize if this comes as old news to most, but it certainly slipped under my radar for 8 years. So if you are familiar with Justin Wolfers, stop reading now, but feel free to add any insight. But I was reading about Quetelet's anomaly and this study was mentioned:

    Favorites are more likely to shave points than
    are underdogs: For an underdog to commit
    not to cover the spread implies committing to
    losing the game, while the favorite can both
    win and not cover. Thus, the payment required
    to motivate the underdog not to cover
    is typically larger than that required to induce
    the favorite to shave points.

    Wow, who of though even college kids need money.. oh well, another day another dollar.
