Cool, now 3 evil empires....we now know the next 5-10 world series' will be played in the EST zone and in the cold....no wonder why I hate baseball. No wonder why baseball has fallen off the map across the country...although very happy the Y's weren't able buy this one....go Red Sox!

I'm a life long Yankee fan and I agree with you it get embarrassing after a while. I'm pissed that they extended the years from 6 to 7 for Lee but they couldn't piss away a few more million and let Jeter finish like he's suppose to. The kid has to much class to leave the Yankees and they knew it. I know it's business I understand but I also understand if George was alive Jeter would have never gone through this. Fuck the Yankees if I didn't hate the Mets so much and the Red sox I might root for them.
I think this year I'll root with my wife and her family for the Tigers. How does it feel Cashman Lee didn't want to be a Yankee. Believe it or not not everybody does.

I don't know who made the Jeter/Yank thing public, but if it was Jeter he deserved to be called out then. He is greatly overpaid. No one else would have given him anything close to what the Yanks were willing to pay. I didn't follow it very closely mainly because baseball has sucked for 15 years.

I love how a thread titled "Phillies Sign Cliff Lee" turns into a Yankee's and Derek Jeter Debate. Then people wonder why they are called the Evil Empire.

sportsbook.com had the phillies at 6/1 to win the WS before the lee news and +180 after, betonline and betus also had the phillies at 6/1, both now have it OTB. I couldn't find WS odds anywhere else.

Rumor out their now is that they will be trading Joe Blanton to the Red Sox for Mike Cameron. Sox will likely eat most of Blanton's contract.

Red Sox are still better than Phillies and they have no problem beating Halladay or Lee,Sox will outhit , outpitch an outrun the Phillies! I will Take Lester,Buckholz,Beckett,Lackey and Matsuzaka over that rotation anyday Lester and Buckholz would annihilate NL lineups

Slow down on that Boston Koolaid. That's strong words for the 3rd best team in their division that has the same starters they did last year.

Beckett, Matsuzaka and Lackey were all somewhere in the range of average to completely unreliable last year. I'll take the phillies staff any day regardless of the 5th starter

Lest we forget what Matsuzaka did when he pitched against the Phillies 8 plus innings of no hit ball,Beckett's postseason record is impeccable and Lackey has been a top starter in the AL which Oswalt and Hamels could never do and just a hunch Cliff Lee took less to face NL lineups every night

Shouldnt you be happy he didnt sign with the Yankees? Travis Wood pitched 8 innings of no hit ball against the Phillies too, is he now someone we should fear? As for Becketts postseason numbers, they dont mean anything until they get to the postseason, something he and the rest of the staff could not do last year. I'll take my chances with two CY Youngs, an NLCS MVP, and a WS/NLCS MVP.

hey i think you guys are forgetting about the Giants! i dont care how much $$ you spend in baseball it will not buy you a championship you have to win it on the field. the giants young pitching staff will only be stronger this year and buster posey is emerging as a superstar. I pull for the Atlanta Braves and i think we have a chance next year. You just never know in baseball!

Matsuzaka definitely has his moments but the next start he didn't get out of the 5th against KC and walked 8, so I wouldn't base much on one start. And Lackey is a solid pitcher but put up all those numbers in the AL West so it's not like he was facing the yankees and red sox every night. I have a hard time thinking his competition was better than what Hamels and Oswalt face in the NL East and Central. No dog in this fight, just think that staff has to make Philly the team to beat now.

My thoughts are that Lee was so disappointed when he was traded last year (this very same day), and now the Phils realized how much he wanted to stay here after they had traded him. My guess is that his agent, "speaking" for Lee, may have come on too strong, and aliented Phils ownership with contractual demands. Lee may have had much more input into these negotiations, and the Phils are welcoming back a stud who really loved it here. Win-Win for everybody.
Only question is who is the NL Cy Young next year with Hamels, Lee, Oswalt and Halladay?

this thread is fantastic....all sorts of homer-ism. people talking dice-k....get outta here with that business. this could very well be the best rotation in the modern era. sox fans chirping, trying to make themselves feel better by talking themselves into thinking they are the better team makes me feel great. its not even close to the postseason and they are already worried. Go Phils.

explain to me where the Phillies are better than the red sox not 1st base not 2nd base ok at shortstop not 3rd base not left field ok in centerfield not right field ok at catcher for now 8th inning guy Bard closer clearly Papelbon over Lidge There is a reason Halladay and Lee ran to the NL 8th and 9th hitters are automatic outs ask Roger Clemens!

Halladay and Lee sure had a tough time in the AL. They both just won an award called the CY Young while they were there. I dont think the Red Sox can boast the type of accolades the Phillies pitchers have.

Halladay was traded to the national league and I don't think he was exactly getting beat up over in the al. Comparing position by position doesn't determine which team will win anyway (the Giants illustrate that) but Pedroia is not a better player than Utley and Gonzalez and Howard are probably a wash.

Utley would NEVER win a MVP in the AL and howard plays in a little league park watch Gonzales at Fenway my fondest memory of Philadelphia was watching Manny Ramirez laughing his ass off because he thought he popped up little did he know it landed in the seats!Last 3 Years halladay and Lee combined 5-6 against Red Sox

    sawks guy.....

    i guess we shall see

its funny how your trying to find ways to take jabs at two of the best pitchers in the ENTIRE league...NL or AL. you say howard plays in a little league park....then how come the best rotation in the game is filled with guys who WANT to pitch in this park?? doesnt really make sense. your whole lee jumped to NL so he'd have an easier time argument carries no weight b/c out of the other side of your mouth your talking about how bad the park is for pitchers...so how is he taking the easy road...? position by position is just a joke w/ baseball, so no need to get into that. and you can have papelbon...who by the way is fading each and every yr...the phils wont exactly be taxing the pen this year w/ these arms.
o by the way...manny can laugh all he wants...how'd he fair beating the Phils?
