if I hear one more announcer or studio host say"He is from the playgrounds of NYC or CHI,he is so tough"..as if growing up in those 2 cities are somewhat 5000% harder than any other city in the usa growing up.
Enough already...

Agree, it IS harder growing up and playing schoolyard (playground) ball in NYC than any other city...probably the same in Chicago...credit should be given where credit is due!

I grew up in Minot, ND . How dare they assume NY or CHI is tougher? We are rough and tough up here. Did anyone see my Snuggie ?

Feel free to come here anytime you like. I will take you to a few "play grounds" and you decide for yourself how tough it is to play here. You have no idea.

tired of hearing it too beefcake. I wish I had a reality show of my life growing up, they'd be classifying guys according to a category named after me. They'd be saying, "he is definitely a coachesplays background."

Also, try growing up with no cable TV, that is tough.

When they say that, it repulses RUDY, too.

I agree that it is an overused comment... however---

I am from Chicago and I drive by some areas where I would never in my life play on those courts. I'd love to play, but I would fear for my safety if I did play there.

I have lived in orlando, Fla and it is tough down there.

Every time you are on the street (in a car) you are taking a chance on your life.

Those old, retired people don't know how to drive.

Grew up in Queens. Been to most blacktop courts in the area, and announcers do not exxagerate. Even out on Long Island its tough ball.

sherron collins high school - two housing projects go to, in the middle of 4 gangs' territory. kids need a police escort to get to the bus to just go home for the day - no joke. played there and around the city in a lot of summer league games. kids like him deserve a lot of credit for getting to where they are.

the announcers are right on but they do get a little carried away...

Did not grow up in tough area, Tulsa, OK

I did crack up one time in a pick up game on the wrong side of the tracks, when some black dude wiped out driving the hoop and a switchblade came out of his pocket. He just picked it up and ran to the other end like nothing happened. Pretty funny!

I think that he is just saying that it makes no difference where you play. Marbury is a soft, punk-ass ghetto rat, and the Wilmington kid may have been the best ever to play.

Seems like lots of people in this thread take a lot of pride in growing up in "tough" and "dangerous" areas..

I'm thrilled i grew up in an affluent area where you don't have to walk down the street and be fearful. I prefer to wave at my neighbors with a glass of lemonade then get punched in the nose by all the tough guys most of you had to face off against everyday

    Q. You want to know how you can tell when a television announcer is lying?

    A. His lips are moving.
