I am sitting here watching AFI"s top 10 sports movies ever.....Raging Bull was #1 and I would disagree. Anyway the thread is for YOUR FAVORITE sports movies ever.
Heres how it goes....(I'll tally up tommorow night). List your top 3 FAVORITE sports movies #3 #2 and #1.....We'll say 5 points for #1, 3 points for #2 and 1 point for #3......feel free to give as many "honorable mentions" as you like, but list a top 3.
Might be hard to separate comedies from inspirational ones!
#3....Remember the Titans.....LOVED IT
#2....Rocky 4........I know I know
#1....Rocky 2
SUPER shout out to Caddy shack, Jerry McGuire(seriously), Miracle, The Replacements, For Love of the game, Major League, Kingpin, Rocky, The Mighty Ducks(no Im not gay). Slapshot, unneccessary roughness, Field of Dreams,Bull Durham....and Im sure plenty more

1. Raging Bull (anyone not putting it there must not have seen it.)
What happened to Robert Dienero? Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, a young Vito Corleone, Capone in the Untouchables, even Sleepers, and of course Jake Lamotta....holy shit that guy was a legend and know wears fake boobs in movies with Jerry Stiller's kid
anyway just De Niro's power in that movie at a time when Scorsese was making films with heart and the rawness, highlighted by brutal scenes ending with "you never put me down Ray!!!" i don't know De Niro or Keanu Reaves....tough one
but there is a stark difference between movies of today and those of yesterday...every sports movie today is based on the same formula for all hollywood bullshit, the myth of the happy ending. I know Titans based on true story. but i think my top 3 there all held the common thread of highlighting human struggle against abusive prison gaurds, pain, drugs and the lure of money, and personal demons. sometimes merely metaphors, sometimes honest depictions, just solid movies not propped up by swooning pieces of symphony music and teary-eyed high fives after our hero, or heroes, triumph. Raging Bull is not an original tale, Jake Lamotta embodied the literal concept of the tragic figure. a great story with a great actor and a great director, and Joe Pesci got his rib broken....what more could one ask?
just my two cents, worthless as that is
2 Raging Bull
3 Rocky
1)Long Gone--baseball movie with William Petereson(CSI) and Virginia Madsen as Dixie Lee Boxx, you even have Teller in a speaking role.
2)Vision Quest--some of it was kinda corny, but the sport part with Matthew Modine as the big under dog wrestler trying to beat the king wrestler in the area, Chute, has a great realistic feel to it.
As a lifelong Celtic fan can I mention maybe the worst ever, Celtic Pride!!!!
