Evansville was near the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference last season, but the MVC has been a very good conference in recent years and the Aces are going to be more competitive this season with 5 returning starters. Teams with 5 returning starters are often overrated early in the season, but that is not the case with teams that were bad the previous year. In fact, bad teams are good bets early in the year if they return all 5 starters and Evansville applies to a solid 61-28-2 ATS situation that is based on that premise. Miami-Florida is coming off a couple of easy home wins, but the Hurricanes apply to a negative 22-59-1 ATS road letdown situation for this game. Missouri Valley teams have been good bets in recent years in early season non-conference games, as the MVC is 83-43-5 ATS in non-conference games when not favored by 4 points or more (in the first 10 games of the season) since 2003. The MVC may finally be getting its due and that trend may not work as well this season, but I thought it was interesting to point out. My ratings favor Miami by 3 points and I'll take Evansville in a 2-Star Best Bet at +3 points or more and for 3-Stars at +4 points or more.

Eastern Illinois (+16½) over DE PAUL

Eastern Illinois coach Mike Miller restocked his team after finishing 6-21 in his first year with the former coaches players. Miller grabbed some junior college players to add depth to what should be improved returning players and the Panthers have already shown that they are playing better defense this season. Eastern Illinois has allowed just 42% shooting in 4 games and they lost by just 2 points as a 17 ½ point underdog at Iowa State 5 nights ago. DePaul returns 4 starters and should be an NIT caliber team this season, but the Blue Demons have bee horrible in their first two games, losing by 20 points at Bradley and by 10 points at Northwestern despite being favored in both games. I'm not going to put to my weight on those early results as I'm pretty sure DePaul is not going to be worse this season. My ratings favor DePaul by 18 points in this game but the line has been bet down from +19 points to +16 ½ points. I like Eastern Illinois anyway because of a very good 42-7 ATS subset of an 89-26-2 ATS early season indicator that applies to the Panthers. That situation has a 61% chance of winning at a fair line, but 1½ points of negative line value is worth nearly 6%, making Eastern Illinois a 55% play at +16½ points. While 55% is a profitable percentage it is not quite good enough to make this game a Best Bet. I'll take Eastern Illinois in a 2-Star Best Bet at +17 points or more and I will consider the Panthers an opinion at +16½ points.

Buffalo lost 3 of their top 4 players from last year's team and this looks like a rebuilding year for the Bulls. Cleveland State, meanwhile, has new hope with coach Gary Waters taking over the team this season. Waters did a magical job of turning around Kent State before taking the job at Rutgers a few years back and he should immediately restore some enthusiasm to a dead program. Cleveland State has been horrible in recent years but the Vikings were competitive with George Mason in their opener, a spread covering 5 point loss, and they built their confidence some more with an easy 26 point win over a Division 2 team. Cleveland State applies to a 35- 4 ATS subset of a very strong 89-26-2 ATS early season indicator that plays on teams that were bad last season. Buffalo, meanwhile, applies to a negative 23-81-2 ATS early season indicator that plays against teams that were good last season (that angle went against Toledo early today). Those two angles have applied to the same game 3 times and the record is a perfect 3-0. My ratings favor Buffalo by 1 point, which is what the line is and I'll take Buffalo in a 3- Star Best Bet at +1 or more and for 2-Stars at pick or -1.

Evansville was near the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference last season, but the MVC has been a very good conference in recent years and the Aces are going to be more competitive this season with 5 returning starters. Teams with 5 returning starters are often overrated early in the season, but that is not the case with teams that were bad the previous year. In fact, bad teams are good bets early in the year if they return all 5 starters and Evansville applies to a solid 61-28-2 ATS situation that is based on that premise. Miami-Florida is coming off a couple of easy home wins, but the Hurricanes apply to a negative 22-59-1 ATS road letdown situation for this game. Missouri Valley teams have been good bets in recent years in early season non-conference games, as the MVC is 83-43-5 ATS in non-conference games when not favored by 4 points or more (in the first 10 games of the season) since 2003. The MVC may finally be getting its due and that trend may not work as well this season, but I thought it was interesting to point out. My ratings favor Miami by 3 points and I'll take Evansville in a 2-Star Best Bet at +3 points or more and for 3-Stars at +4 points or more.

Eastern Illinois (+16½) over DE PAUL

Eastern Illinois coach Mike Miller restocked his team after finishing 6-21 in his first year with the former coaches players. Miller grabbed some junior college players to add depth to what should be improved returning players and the Panthers have already shown that they are playing better defense this season. Eastern Illinois has allowed just 42% shooting in 4 games and they lost by just 2 points as a 17 ½ point underdog at Iowa State 5 nights ago. DePaul returns 4 starters and should be an NIT caliber team this season, but the Blue Demons have bee horrible in their first two games, losing by 20 points at Bradley and by 10 points at Northwestern despite being favored in both games. I'm not going to put to my weight on those early results as I'm pretty sure DePaul is not going to be worse this season. My ratings favor DePaul by 18 points in this game but the line has been bet down from +19 points to +16 ½ points. I like Eastern Illinois anyway because of a very good 42-7 ATS subset of an 89-26-2 ATS early season indicator that applies to the Panthers. That situation has a 61% chance of winning at a fair line, but 1½ points of negative line value is worth nearly 6%, making Eastern Illinois a 55% play at +16½ points. While 55% is a profitable percentage it is not quite good enough to make this game a Best Bet. I'll take Eastern Illinois in a 2-Star Best Bet at +17 points or more and I will consider the Panthers an opinion at +16½ points.

Buffalo lost 3 of their top 4 players from last year's team and this looks like a rebuilding year for the Bulls. Cleveland State, meanwhile, has new hope with coach Gary Waters taking over the team this season. Waters did a magical job of turning around Kent State before taking the job at Rutgers a few years back and he should immediately restore some enthusiasm to a dead program. Cleveland State has been horrible in recent years but the Vikings were competitive with George Mason in their opener, a spread covering 5 point loss, and they built their confidence some more with an easy 26 point win over a Division 2 team. Cleveland State applies to a 35- 4 ATS subset of a very strong 89-26-2 ATS early season indicator that plays on teams that were bad last season. Buffalo, meanwhile, applies to a negative 23-81-2 ATS early season indicator that plays against teams that were good last season (that angle went against Toledo early today). Those two angles have applied to the same game 3 times and the record is a perfect 3-0. My ratings favor Buffalo by 1 point, which is what the line is and I'll take Buffalo in a 3- Star Best Bet at +1 or more and for 2-Stars at pick or -1.
