Nevada sportsbooks win $39.6 million in September as football does the heavy lifting

Nevada sportsbooks continue to thrive in September.

The state’s books won $39.6 million in September—including $27.9 million from football bets—according to revenue reports released by Nevada Gaming Control on Thursday.

Approximately $336 million was bet on football, both pro and college, at Nevada books in September. The books kept 8.29 percent of it.

The total won was down 25.8 percent from last year’s record September, when sportsbooks won $43.5 million on football bets alone. That record month was fueled by a strong performance by NFL underdogs, which went 37-23-2 against the spread last September. This September, NFL favorites went 31-29-2 against the spread, leveling off the books’ winnings.

Roughly $23 million more was bet on football this September compared to last, but books held onto five percent less of the wagers. Since 2004, books have boasted an average hold percentage of 11.47 in September, which is by far their best month of the football season. December has been their second best football month, with an average hold percentage of 6.15 since 2004.

The Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez fight also made a big impact. Boxing wagers are included in the “other” category in the NGC’s revenue reports. Roughly $22 million was wagered on “other” sports, which includes golf, tennis, soccer, etc. The books won $2.4 million on “other” wagers, a 258 percent increase from last September, with no Mayweather fight. Approximately $10.9 million was waged on the “other” category last September, with books winning $691,000.

The books also had a big baseball month in September, winning $4.7 million, a 136.2 percent increase from last September.
