As much as anything there is a stigma still attached to sports betting in the US that seems silly considering how prevalent sports betting seems in places like Canada/England Etc. On top of that its impossible to get any laws passed or laws repealed period in congress on important issues, let alone something with the stigma of sports betting. NJ getting this to court seems like the only realistic shot on the horizon of making headway to move sports betting forward. I don't even know if they have a good shot, but its a shot. If NJ somehow is successful in court the entire house of cards will fall and states that want sports gambling will have it. If NJ fails we may be stuck with the status quo for a long time. Its not terrible, but it is what it is.

If multiple states located near each other like NJ/NY have sports betting you would get a competitive -110 product or they won't be successful. Its too clear you are getting screwed with juice in sports if they try to get cute with how much they are making on the take.

This is good news! Someone out there thinks this could really happen or the leagues wouldn't be wasting their time (& money!)

NFL, other sports leagues sue New Jersey over gambling
Posted by Mike Florio on August 7, 2012, 10:14 AM EDT

APGovernor Chris Christie can now accuse the other 30 NFL teams of hating New Jersey.

Along with every other pro sports league. And Rutgers.

The NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, and NCAA have filed suit against New Jersey in response to a plan to launch betting on pro and college games.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Trenton, New Jersey, relies on the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act.

It’s a fairly simple proposition. The federal government decided 20 years ago to slam the door on betting on pro and college sports. Congress left a narrow window open, allowing states like New Jersey with no pre-existing sports gambling program to launch sports betting in the period between January 1, 1993 and January 1, 1994.

Any state that didn’t now can’t. New Jersey didn’t.

It’s even more important for the NFL to fight New Jersey on this point, since a pair of NFL teams play its home games there.

Christie surely will bluster about fighting the lawsuit, pushing the concept of states rights. But as we’ve previously explained, the NFL already has won this fight against Delaware, securing a victory not only at the trial-court level but also in the federal appeals court that has jurisdiction over Delaware. That same federal court — the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit — also encompasses New Jersey.

This means that the issue already has been settled. As a result, any gambling on pro sports in New Jersey will have to continue on an illegal basis.

The NFL possibly will be surprised to learn that, yes, illegal gambling happens. In New Jersey. And pretty much everywhere else.

    My Favorite parts

"And it doesn't acknowledge that there is illegal sports gambling going on in every state in America, as we speak. So why is this more injurious than illegal sports gambling to the operations of the league or the NCAA?"

Thank you Christie for telling the truth. Almost their entire argument is based on a wink and nod that illegal booking doesn't exist...laughable man.

The leagues' lawsuit said that allowing sports gambling in New Jersey would threaten the "reputations and goodwill" between fans and teams. Damage to that bond, the lawsuit states, would cause irreversible damage to sports franchises.

So Man U isn't the most popular and most recognizable franchise in any sport on the face of the Earth? Terrible argument redux.

The big picture as I see it: Even if they legalize it, nothing will change. Who the fuck is going to go to a state run chop shop with 15 or 20 cents lines, at best, and crap lines? you think a government run book can survive with 10 cent lines? no fucking way!!!

And how would private sector books survive an incredibly high tax rate? ain't gonna happen.

Wow, I'm really interested to see where this heads. Living about 35-40 minutes from AC, it would certainly open up some new options for me. And AC needs it badly right now (might even be enough to get someone to buy the Revel, Showboat, and/or Trump).

I couldn't care less about the lack of "excitement" in AC. I'd just be thrilled to get additional outs that are easily accessible and secure.

Wouldn't you have similar atmosphere in NJ ? With watching and betting games in a Sports Bar ?

I was just going to comment, if this trend continues and California gets sports gambling, you can officially close Reno and soon most of Nevada.

real quick NO ...who wants to seat with a bunch of dickheads from new York and new jersey all in one room, it would be like going to a bar at the jersey shore. Besides the rooms would be like 400 bucks

I ve met so many people from all over this county we all get together every march at the nugget ,ill never give that up, who would travel to AC ..

When we first started going to vegas for march madness we stayed at the old vegas world casino, the older guys on here would know the place,it would be cheaper to fly to vegas and stay there then to stay in AC for a weekend, plus they had unlimited drinking at any bar in the casino , you will never get that in AC or anywhere now for that matter .... fucking giants ,how can someone be so open....

tommy I understand what your saying

Sen. Lesniak is 0-1. Hopefully in the future he'll post a public record, document a WA line, and track his closing line value.

So they put it into law and the first day, a Senator breaks the law. I thought you couldn't "bet" on teams that play in New Jersey? :)

He might be ok, from philly.com...

Under the Christie directive, betting is still prohibited on college sports taking place in New Jersey and on games involving New Jersey colleges wherever they take place.

I wonder if California will also self impose the non-Californian team rule ?

For California that would be a ton of teams.

I don't think if Nevada does that anymore.
