A battle for the early lead is expected to develop between Moon Catcher, Tough Tiz’s Sis, and Folk. Octave and Lady Joanne should be within striking distance of the frontrunners, with Panty Raid and Lear’s Princess bringing up the rear but racing in close order as well. </TD></TR><TR><TD>

</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>First Selection: (2) PANTY RAID (Pletcher Todd A/Prado E S)</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD style="TEXT-INDENT: 3%">Panty Raid has been an absolute gem of consistency since unveiled by trainer Todd Pletcher at Saratoga in 2006. She has been worse than second only once in her career, and looks well spotted today to continue her winning ways in the Alabama. Equally proficient on turf, dirt, or over Polytrack, Panty Raid has flourished over a route of ground this year. Her recent victory at Hollywood Park on the grass demonstrated her versatility, as she stalked the early fractions prior to assuming command in the stretch in her turf debut. She then held grimly to come away with a well-deserved victory in a Grade 1 event at today's 10-furlong distance. A near-bullet work over the Saratoga main track on August 12 is indicative of her current level of sharpness. Once again, Panty Raid projects to sit the right trip from just off the pace, and proceed to make her move when given her cue by jockey Edgar Prado. Prado has ridden her in her last four starts, and only a head defeat at Turfway Park, when she delayed the start by breaking through the gate, stands between them and an unblemished record as partners. Finally, it is important to note that she broke her maiden in her career debut by nearly 8 lengths in fast time over this track. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Second Selection: (4) OCTAVE (Pletcher Todd A/Velazquez J R)</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD style="TEXT-INDENT: 3%">Todd Pletcher's other entrant has been unbeaten since finishing a strong second to stablemate Rags To Riches in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs earlier this year. Upon returning to New York for a summer campaign, this $350,000 yearling purchase has delivered two strong efforts, coming away with hard fought victories in the G1 Mother Goose on June 30 at Belmont Park, and in the G1 Coaching Club American Oaks three weeks later. A runner who seems to relish a heated battle in the stretch, Octave has a tendency to wait a bit on horses once she makes the lead. There is no denying her grit or determination, but she will have to be extremely ‘focused’ in order to register her third successive Grade 1 victory today. She has worked well at Saratoga, and pace-pressing tactics are expected once again with John Velazquez in the irons. Octave is the lone entrant in this field to boast a win at today’s 1-1/4 mile distance on the main track. She is also one for one over the track, which was a strong win as a two year old in the Grade 2 Adirondack. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Third Selection: (7) LADY JOANNE (Nafzger Carl A/Borel C H)</B></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD style="TEXT-INDENT: 3%">While Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense has garnered most of the attention in the Carl Nafzger barn, and rightfully so, Lady Joanne has made some noise of her own. A homebred runner, Lady Joanne has blossomed as a three-year-old, winning three of four starts as a sophomore runner. Her biggest accomplishment to date might have actually come in defeat, when she was beaten only a half-length by Octave in the Grade 1 Mother Goose at Belmont Park on June 30. Since that race, Lady Joanne was a decisive winner in a Handicap contest at Saratoga on July 30, which was nothing more than a “tune-up” race for the Alabama. A smart five-furlong workout on August 13 clearly indicates that she maintains her current level of sharpness, and she is expected to revert to stalking tactics today. Without question, she is more than capable of coming away with the lion’s share of purse if able to work out a trip from her outside post. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Fourth Selection: (6) LEAR'S PRINCESS (Mclaughlin Kiaran P/Coa E M)</B></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD style="TEXT-INDENT: 3%">Like Lady Joanne, Lear’s Princess' best effort in her brief career was a strong second-place showing to Octave, while tackling Grade 1 competition for the first time. Lear’s Princess pushed the odds-on favorite to the limit that day in the Coaching Club American Oaks on July 1, but was unable to close the deal as her rally fell a half-length short. However, she was racing against the grain of a speed-favoring track, and therefore may have run at least as well as Octave. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Lear’s Princess will attempt to exact her revenge today, and will be afforded every opportunity to do so. The distance should not pose a problem for her, and she has every right to move forward off her initial start over a conventional dirt track. She demonstrated that she can handle the Saratoga main track with a useful speed-sharpening move on August 12. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Wagering Strategy

A fast pace is expected, with Fleet Caroline as the probable pacesetter. Forest Melody could put pressure on her, with Passified close up as well. The turf course has been playing fairly to all running styles, and with a strong pace expected, the closers should have every opportunity to rally effectively.</TD></TR><TR><TD>

</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>First Selection: (7) SUPPOSITION (Frankel Robert J/Dominguez R A)</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD style="TEXT-INDENT: 3%">Showed much potential in Ireland last year as a 2yo, with her best race coming when she lost by just 1 length in a Group 1 event. That race was her only one on firm turf in Ireland, and suggested that she would appreciate the firmer turf in the United States. She came off a 10-month layoff for her U.S. debut with a very tough assignment in the G1 American Oaks, which was also her first route race ever. Despite the layoff, and despite racing much longer than she ever had before, and despite the saddle slipping, she lost by less than 4 lengths. With all that worked against her that day, she has the potential for a huge forward move in the Del Mar Oaks. She should be fitter second time back and also shortens up a furlong. She's shown good tactical speed and can work out a stalking trip that gives her first run on the leaders, ahead of main rivals Valbenny and Rutherienne. Bobby Frankel has had success in the past when using top-class rider Ramon Dominguez, and he flies in to ride Supposition for the first time today. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Second Selection: (9) VALBENNY (Gallagher Patrick/Solis A)</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD style="TEXT-INDENT: 3%">Has won 4 of 6 starts in this country, all in turf stakes, and could have won 5 if she had a better trip in the G1 American Oaks last time out. She had to wait in traffic, then was bumped in the stretch while in the midst of her usual powerful rally. Both she and Rutherienne boast an outstanding late turn of foot, but she projects to make her move ahead of that rival, and would be hard to catch from behind if she does. Alex Solis rides her perfectly and came out of a slump with multiple winners on Friday. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Third Selection: (8) RUTHERIENNE (Clement Christophe/Nakatani C S)</B></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD style="TEXT-INDENT: 3%">The best 3yo turf filly in the east invades for top turf trainer Christophe Clement, who has a history of much success when shipping in to California. Rutherienne has only lost once in 7 starts, and that race was off a 4+ month layoff. Most recently she put in a bold rail rally thru tight quarters while posting her final 5/16 of a mile in a lightning fast :28-3/5. The effort was flattered when the 3rd place finisher returned to win the G2 Lake Placid at Saratoga on Friday. The stretch out to 9 furlongs helps her chances and she gets top turf rider Nakatani, who has won many turf stakes for Clement in the past. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Fourth Selection: (6) FLEET CAROLINE (Cerin Vladimir/Talamo Joseph)</B></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD style="TEXT-INDENT: 3%">Stepped up in class to face graded stakes company for the first time July 28 and ran a remarkable race in the G2 San Clemente over this turf course. She was coming off a 3-month layoff and was probably not 100% fit, yet still nearly won on the lead after setting a suicidal first quarter of :21-3/5. She broke from outermost post 10, cleared to the rail, and wasn't caught until the final 40 yards, losing by just 1/2 length. She should be fitter in her second start off the layoff, and if Joe Talamo can slow her down better in the early going then she could stretch out the extra furlong. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Wagering Strategy

* A win bet on (7)SUPPOSITION* Exacta boxes 7-8, 7-9* Smaller exacta box 8-9* Trifecta 7 over 6-8-9 over 1-3-4-5-6-8-9 = $18 for a $1 wager</PRE></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></P>
