The best way to explain a horse switching leads is to relate it to a
person carrying something heavy.

Have you ever been carrying something heavy on one arm, and when it starts
to get too heavy you'll switch whatever it is to the other arm. Then you
can continue to hold it without putting it down.

When a horse starts to tire, it can switch which leg it's leading
(running) on, to the other leg. Switching leads will allow the horse to
continue running up to speed for a little longer than if it was on the
other tired leg.

Something like that.

MrExacta -`
