I was reading about "The Crew" in Rolling Stone magazine last night. I
think Produce was mentioning one of these guys during the WSOP. Very
interesting reading, great backstories about the ringleader and his group.
It is in the June 16th issue with the Dave Matthews Band on the cover. It
may be available online as well.

anybody who markets themself with some kind of angle can become one of
these new, chic poker players. I have seen shows do little spoofs on "the
crew" and those guys are the biggest bunch of goofs I have ever seen.

you want to know what bugs me about all these poker shows? The fact that
they never talk about losing. Most poker players lose. The game is not as
simple as waiting for ace king and raising. But never on ESPN is there any
mention that some of these guys - Doyle, Hellmuth, Nguyen - to name a few
have all been BUSTED at various points of their careers. None of that is
ever mentioned. It is so ridiculous. It gives a false impression. Doyle
once said/wrote that if you plan on learning to play poker, be ready to
lose what it would cost for a new Cadillac. That is almost a direct quote.
But never do you ever hear about the losses.

Funny you mention that... they were saying that the largest growing
demographic for Texas hold 'em from the TV show on ESPN was KIDS age 12-20!
They can't even get IN a casino but they are all playing at Mom's kitchen
table, probably playing online with the college fund.
It's a whole new crop for GA.

I have seen shows profiling parents who host poker games for their
teenagers. Their reasoning is because it's safer than having the kids out
or out drinking. Unreal! What sours me is that if one of these kids got a
bookie and started playing teasers, their parents would flip out. But
poker is OK because ESPN says so.
In the history of man, never has gambling been so falsely represented and
misrepresented all the while being showcased so positively.
What happens when little Joey decides he wants to quit college in a few
years and play poker? Will that be supported by mom and dad, who have
nobody to blame but themselves.

Also, my newspaper is considering/starting to run poker articles in the
sports section.
