Nevada sportsbooks enjoy record-setting August on the strength of solid football hold

Nevada sportsbooks had their best August in at least a decade.

The state’s books won $14.2 million, a 98.7 percent increase from last August and nearly double any other August since at least 2004, according to revenue numbers released today by Nevada Gaming Control.

In August 2008, the books won $7.8 million, the second-largest August since the NGC began tracking monthly revenue numbers in 2004. This year, the books won 7.95 percent of the approximately $179 million bet on sports at Nevada books in August.

The books won $9.5 million on football and held 20.17 percent of the roughly $47.2 million wagered on college football’s opening week and several weeks of NFL preseason.

In comparison, the books won $5.2 million on a full month of regular-season baseball in August, which was still a 240 percent increase from last August. The books held onto just 4.26 percent of the roughly $122 million dollars bet on baseball during the month.

The books are up $25.9 million on baseball since April. They’ve won an average of $23.9 million on baseball over the past five years.
