Single entries reign again in DraftKings Millionaire Maker; two players share top prize

As the debate over multiple-entry tournaments and computer scripts hangs over Daily Fantasy Sports, little guys keep taking home the biggest prizes—at least in golf.

For the third straight time, DraftKings’ Millionaire Maker golf contest was brought down by a silver bullet—or in this case, a pair of them—as single-entry competitors Dr_Cash007 and jrazajr split the top prize of $1.1 million as Zach Johnson emerged from a three-way playoff to win the British Open on Monday.

It’s worth mentioning here that scripts would seem to offer less of an advantage in a large golf tournament, where the field of competitors is relatively stable in comparison to other sports, and users have days instead of hours to create and submit lineups.

Even so, it’s noteworthy that three of the top-10 finishers, 10 of the top 20, and 26 of the top 52 entered the Millionaire Maker with a single $20 lineup. Those top 52 finishers entered an average of 7.6 lineups, a number skewed heavily by ninth-place finisher hardrada’s 225 total entries. That ninth-place finish grossed $10,000, by the way, more than enough to offset the $4,500 paid for 225 entries.

As for the winning lineups, jrazajr had each of the top-three finishers, including the 1.6 percent-owned Marc Leishman, who scored 109 points. Dr_Cash007 also had Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen, and found big value in Ollie Schniederjans, who was owned in just 0.5 percent of lineups, but finished the tournament tied for 12th and scored 95.5 points.
