Arkansas casino starts offering legal betting; Calif. assemblyman introduces betting bill

Arkansas now has legal sports betting.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Hoyt said in a statement that Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort began offering sports wagering Monday morning and will allow gamblers to bet on games ranging from professional football and college basketball to cricket and rugby.

A California assemblyman has started a push to bring legal sports betting to California.

California Assemblyman Adam Gray said ACA 16, a proposed state constitutional amendment, is the start of a complex push for sports betting that will be followed by a series of joint informational hearings with the senate.

“The goal is to get something on the 2020 November ballot,” Gray told ESPN on Thursday.

Many of the details on how sports betting would take place in California are undetermined, but Gray says he has visited with several of the state’s professional sports franchises — including the Sacramento Kings, LA Clippers and Los Angeles Rams — and believes that momentum is building as more states enter the bookmaking business.

“I know there’s significant interest throughout the California sports economy,” Gray said.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills put a sports betting bill in limbo when she declined to sign it before its deadline.

Maine Sen. Louis Luchini and Rep. Scott Strom told Legal Sports Report that Mills opted not to sign the sports betting legislation because of concerns about expanding gambling in the state.

An oddball rule allowed Mills to essentially ice the bill. She could still veto the bill within three days of the beginning of the next legislative session, whether that be a special session held this summer or next year’s regular session. If she again did not act within those three days, the bill would become law.
