Former Yankee PC Billy Connors RIP

Great guy that would teach us as Little Leaguers the fundamentals of the game. He had a curve ball that brought him to the majors with various teams. Outstanding person and athlete. The Boss loved him.

Anyway, here's a short story about him. Incidentally, he had absolutely nothing to do with gambling. As young teenagers back in NY, we'd bet the baseball mostly with case $$(5&10). The Cubs were facing the Hank Aaron Braves and took the lead in extra innings. We bet the Cubs and needed 3 outs. The Braves threatened in bottom of the 10th with Billy pitching. Leo Durocher went to the mound and asked Connors if he could get this lefty out. "No problem Skipper." Before Leo got back to the dugout the lefty hit one in gap to score the winning run. Post game quote by Durocher, " I'll never trust a God Damn pitcher again."

as Simon and Garfunkel wrote many years ago, 'heaven holds a place for those who pray, and can survive Leo Durocher and George Steinbrenner.'
