I know you didn't make the rule, but I have to ask though, why track this way for dogs? I almost always risk to win 1 unit, favorite or dog - especially in sports where the money line is the primary line (MLB/NHL).

Because while not necessarily mathematically correct, it's industry standard for tracking records and how the average bettor bets.
I should have mentioned that you should feel free to keep a secondary record to reflect how you're actually betting. We require the main record so everyone's is comparable but you're more than welcome to keep a secondary record and weight it however you like.
