I’ve been meaning to post for quite some time but never got around to it until now. Fisr and foremost, thanks for posting your plays here. I am a huge tennis fan and have been playing the game for 40 years. I’ve tried my hand at wagering on it in the past but had little success. I wrote it off a while back as unbeatable. What you did last year made me think otherwise. That was truly a spectacular year. I don’t have the time to dedicate to trying to win at it, but I have been making some spot plays over the past year and have been able to hold my own. Almost all of my plays are WTA. I just can’t relate to the men’s game anymore. I grew up in the Borg, Connors, McEnroe era and had a good handle on how the game was played back then, but not now. I can identify much more with the women’s game since it is more akin to the better club level men’s game. I follow most of your men’s plays and double up when you have a WTA play that agrees with one of my plays.
I know this year hasn’t panned out as well as you had hoped, but with the French Open and the tournaments leading up to it, you have made a nice run back to respectability. Hopefully the rest of the year will go well and you can add another winning year to your ledger.
On a different topic, I know you attend the Indian Wells tournament each year because of your proximity to the tournament. It looks like an awesome tournament and a spectacular setting. I am thinking about coming out next year by combining it with a Vegas trip. My question is how far of a drive is it from Vegas (assuming we fly into Vegas) and what airport would we fly into if we were to go to the tournament first (and how far of a drive is it from the airport)?

If you fly in then you would fly into the Palm Springs Airport which is less than 10 to 20 mins away from the tennis gardens. Palm springs is sometimes a expensive airport to fly into. But if you fly in the LAX its about little under a 2 hour drive to Indio, from Ontario airport (smaller airport)is about a 1 hour drive. From John Wayne (SNA, Santa Ana, Orange County Airport) its about a 1.5 hour drive.
The first place to check would be palm springs. then compare the price to flying into Ontario or LAX. Most international and cross country flights go into LAX.

You definitely deserved a better fate on that Muguruza match.
What do you make of Bouchard’s demise? A year ago she was heading to the Wimbledon final after an incredible rise to the top of the women’s circuit in the prior year. Since then she has been an absolute train wreck. My buddy and I have debated what has happened to her. He thinks it is all about the distractions, i.e. magazine covers, endorsement contracts, etc. I think it is more about her game being exposed by opponents. She has always had major flaws in her game due to her less than proper form and with the sophistication of coaches in today’s game it seems to me that they have figured out how to exploit these flaws.
The same buddy and I are about to make an exotic wager that I’d like your opinion on. The wager is what non grand slam winner will be first to win a grand slam? You get to pick 2 women and 2 men. Halep is off the board because we already have side wager on her. Who would you take?
Bouchard has tons of distractions, Her form is not the best, your right about that. But she takes the ball earlier than anyone in the womens game, and when on can be dangerous. Shes a young pretty girl making tons of money, she left her original coach. from what I heard he left her. I never expected her to amount to much anyways.
For the women's I have always had high opinions of Muguruza, He power game is insane. I like Caroline Garcia on Clay. Keys, if she can get the mental game straitened out. I also thing Wozniacki will eventually get one if she can implement more power to her game.
For the Men, by far the leading candidate is Nishikori. You got Berdych that deserves one eventually, Age is catching up to him though. out of the young group who were juniors just a few years ago I would have to go with Thanasi Kokkinakis, the kid has got god given talent and has a beautiful game, He just needs more time to work things out. I also think the serb Troicki is very underrated. I will have to give this some more though and let you know my 2 final choices for each.

I have: Safarova, Pliskova, Nishikori
We haven’t picked our second man yet.
I tried to pick players that could win on the hard courts since 2 of the 4 slams are on hard courts. I especially tried to stay clear of the power oriented women because of that being the strength of Serena, Pova, Kvitova and Azarenka who I think is working her way back into relevance. That’s why I let him have Keys, which he was surprised I let him have. I was equally as surprised that he let me have Nishikori. The only thing that worries me about him is his lack of size, which is quite a handicap in today’s power game. But I agree with you, he seems to be the clear favorite.
I would have considered Garcia since the French is probably the most likely tournament to have a new slam winner on the women’s side.
I think we are both kicking ourselves for not taking Muguruza. We both considered her. My mistake was not realizing that she was so young (thought she was already in her mid-20’s).
As for the men, I’ll look at Kokkinakis and Troicki. I don’t like Berdych at all. He’s proven over and over that he can’t beat the top players. The other youngster I was looking at was Coric, but once again his lack of size concerns me.
Pliskova is a good pick too. Her game is similar to Muguruza. I think she is older though. Plus Muguruza being espania is comfortable on clay.
even though Dimitrov is not relevant right now. His game is modeled after Fed and as we can see it can be successful. Nishikori and Dimitrov would probably be my 2, but I still will look into it. Kyrgios is a great server and player but in the rally's he i feel he always seems to be in a worse off position and has to get bailed out by a winner. I rarely see him working the point. so for that reason I would keep him off my list. Although is serve is monstrous. Having a really good backhand is the key in the mens game. 3 out of the last 4 grandslam winners I believe have a better backhand than Forehand. Murray, DJ, Wawrinka, Cilic being the odd man out.
Pliskova is only 23, which was one of the reasons I took her. I was actually surprised that she was that young. Safarova isn’t a great play because of her age, but I really like her demeanor. I’m hoping she’s a late career achiever like Li Na was.
We both considered Dmitrov, but it looks like he’s hit a wall in his development. Same with Raonic, and he’s not likely to win outside of Wimbledon. It’s tough on the men’s side because it’s hard to envision a youngster actually winning a slam for quite a while, so it seems more prudent to take a guy like Dmitrov. But the same question arises as to whether he can he really beat the Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka any time in the foreseeable future.

It was 2nd up on grandstand. I believe around 9:30am pacific . They could of very well waited until 945am to start. I did not catch the start time. The match preceding it was doubles match done in 2 sets. There was about an hour from post to get the play in. Sorry you missed it !
